...from the Repertory of JPD - Jeffrey Peterson Dance:
Escalate weaves a relationship between two men into an edgy exploration of dominance. The work repeats and develops uncomfortably aggressive and sexually provocative images. In a see-saw battle of dominant vs. submissive roles, acts of near-violent physicality build throughout.
Escalate's explosive vocabulary relies largely on its wrestling-inspired, highly subjective partnering. Physical intensity intermingles with pregnant pauses and stares of intimidation, establishing physical ebbs and flows while maintaining a crescendo of ominence.
The original score for Escalate, "Like Glass" by Ryan Inselman, explores aural dissonance. Largely created through the use of percussive and other techniques performed on glass, Inselman metaphorically captures Escalate's wrought undertones through an ethereal, creepy use of tonality.
The two men in Escalate are costumed in typical, American, straight male business casual, commenting subtly on homo-social relations. Through a devisive use of physicality, music and costume, Escalate allegorically and literally explores power.
